Welcome to Kindergarten!!
My name is Hannah Roy and I am going to be your child’s Kindergarten teacher this year!! Kindergarten is a time of new beginnings, of making friends and of learning lots of new things each and every day. Our days and weeks will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities for learning and growing.
We will learn all about letters and sounds, and will be doing lots of writing activities, too. We will also be learning all about numbers, building on important math concepts including sorting, counting, graphing, classifying, patterns, measurement, addition and subtraction. The children are always proud of the work they create and are anxious to share their new skills. Families can help at home by reading to and with their child daily and encouraging them to write and draw.
During the first couple of weeks of Kindergarten we work on building a classroom community. We are asking that your child bring in a “Me Bag”. This “Me Bag” should consist of 5 items that would represent them and their interests. Items should be no bigger than those that can fit into a brown paper lunch bag. Please have your child bring in their bag for Tuesday, September 8th.
I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, weekly newsletters, reports and parent-teacher conferences. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. Please feel free to call me at the school or to send in a note with your child regarding any questions, comments or concerns.
Below is some information that we believe will help you in getting accustomed to Munger Hill School so that we have a great year together!
Drop Off and Pick Up
Drop off in the morning is anytime between 8:45 and 8:55. Kindergarten should be dropped off between these times at the Kindergarten entrance by the play scape.
Pick up at the end of the day is 3:00. Kindergarten walkers should be picked up at the back door to our classroom for dismissal.
Just a reminder… there is NO parking in the front circle of the school during these times. It is very busy for arrivals and dismissals and this area is for buses only.
Also, please keep in mind that if you are visiting the school for any reason you MUST report to the office first to sign in and get a visitor’s badge.
The price of hot lunch (milk included) is $2:10. The cost of milk is $.45. You can send lunch/milk money in at the beginning of the week for the entire week or daily.
Each day our class will be having an afternoon snack. We eat lunch at 11:55 and it’s a long afternoon for some in which their tummies will be rumbling so we ask that you send your child into school with a healthy snack and drink each day.
We will be eating snack in the cafeteria and we ask that you send your child’s snack/drink in a designated bag. It can be a reusable bag or throw away bag. Please label these bags with their name and it will help us to keep things organized and easily transported. If your child also brings a home lunch we are asking that it be separate from their snack bag. Thank You!!
In the event that your child is ill, the Westfield Public School policy is that if your child has a fever, they cannot return to school until 24 hours have passed fever free. If your child had been diagnosed with strep throat or pink eye, they cannot return for a full 48 hours being on antibiotics. Also a note must be sent in with your child when he/she returns to school. We do ask that you follow these guidelines as best you can in order to keep the other children in the class healthy.
Notes must be sent in if there is any change in the way that your child is getting dismissed, or he/she will be absent or late on a specific day or again returning from an absence. Also, if your child is a walker and wants to go home on a bus of another student they will not be able to do so. Only the bus students can go on other buses if needed.
Birthdays / Holidays/ Celebrations
If it is your child birthday, please feel free to send in a tangible item to share with the entire class (stickers, balls, bubbles, etc.). I have also suggested they bring in their favorite story that can be shared in celebration of their important day! We no longer welcome edible treats due to allergies. At the end of the year, we will have a special day to celebrate our summer birthdays too!
Throughout the year we will celebrate in many fun ways and will keep you involved in our plan to do so. We will not welcome edible treats but may ask your involvement with sending in something to contribute. For example we had a Halloween “treat” bag with tangible items, and for the 100th day celebration we asked students (with help from their families) to create a project containing 100 objects.
We thank you all in advance for all your help/support throughout the school year and we look forward to working with all of your wonderful children! If you need to contact me (Mrs. Roy) regarding any questions or concerns, please feel free to do so at any time by sending in a note or call the school at 572-6520.
