 Welcome to Fourth Grade
and Room 209

Here are the basic ABC's of 4th Grade:

Attendance Please call the school (572-6520) when your child is absent.  In addition, it is the school district’s policy for a note to be sent in stating the reason for the absence.  If you would like class assignments and homework to be ready for pick-up or sent home with a sibling, please let the office know when you call. Work will be ready by dismissal time. Another option is to email me before school starts and I can forward your email to the office.

Birthdays Our class would love to celebrate your child’s birthday!  Due to food allergies and medical conditions, our class cannot celebrate with a food treat.  If you wish to send in a goodie bag or other non-edible surprise (on the birth date or close to it if the date falls on a weekend or holiday), you may do so.  Please check with me for the current number of students in our class. Sometimes parents request a class list along with addresses and/or phone numbers in order to send out party invitations.  Due to school policy, I am unable to give you that information except for a list of the students’ names. If you would like to send the invitations to school, I would be glad to distribute them discreetly.  Please remind your child to give the invitations directly to me. This is done to avoid hurt feelings if not everyone in the class is invited. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Curriculum In class we will spend time each day working on reading skills as a whole group using the reading series, Reading Street, and in small groups for differentiated reading lessons.  Students will be grouped by their ability in order to enrich, reinforce, or remedy specific reading skills. In math, students will use the enVision math series as well as state model units and other activities.  As in reading, our math time will be divided between whole group instruction and structured small group centers. The Common Core Standards will be implemented in reading, writing, and math. The science and social studies content will be integrated in our reading work as much as possible.  More detailed information regarding curriculum will be shared at Parents’ Night and conferences.

Dismissal for Walkers Please keep in mind all of the different walker categories.  These include Shaker Heights walkers, Playscape walkers, and All Remaining walkers.  Let me know which category your child will normally be in. Remember if you are picking your child up from school at dismissal time, please park in the lot by the Playscape.  If your child is being dismissed as a walker for a weekly engagement (CCD, Cub Scouts, etc), one note for the year will suffice. If your child is attending an afterschool program, please remember to send in a note on the day of the event.  Your sign-up for the activity is not considered a dismissal note. Please help me to keep dismissal time quick, orderly, and, most importantly, safe, by bringing to my attention any change in your child’s dismissal.

Extended Work Time On Thursdays your child is welcome to come before school for an extended school day (a.k.a. Breakfast Club).  Your child may wish to catch up on missing assignments, do some of the enrichment opportunities in the classroom, or receive extra help.  Students may come down to the classroom at 8:30 a.m. We will start on Thursday, September 26th.

From Scholastic to You Once a month I will send home Scholastic book orders.  Payment for these orders is due when you order. If you are writing a check, please make it payable to “Scholastic”.  You may also order books online using the classroom code. The code is always listed on the book orders for your convenience.  Book orders generally take 2 weeks for delivery. Please remember you are under no obligation to purchase anything. The first order is due on September 17th.

Got Supplies? The following materials would be very helpful:

  • One 2” three-ring binder (This binder will be used for your child’s portfolio of work.  It will be kept in your child’s locker during the school year. If at any time during the year you would like to see it, please let me know.)

  • Fifty (50) clear plastic, top loading, sheet protectors (Please make sure these are single, separate sheets and NOT attached to each other.)

  • Two “one subject” spiral notebooks

  • #2 pencils

  • Glue sticks

  • Clorox or Lysol wipes

  • 7 or 9 oz paper cups

  • 3x5 white index cards

  • Tissues

  • Hand sanitizer

Homework Every day your child will be bringing home a homework folder.  Please check the folder and go through the papers with your child.  If you have any notes, messages, questions, or concerns, it would be helpful if you sent these in your child’s folder.  Please also review your child’s “Team Stotz Press Release”, Reading Log, and Math Log each night and sign your name. Homework will be given each day Monday through Thursday.  The purpose of homework is to reinforce and/or practice the curriculum being taught in the classroom. The assignments should last no longer than 30 to 45 minutes. Please let me know if your child is consistently spending more time.  Assignments will only be given on Friday when there is unfinished work from the week. If there is excessive unfinished work, I will send it home during the week as well.

Interviewing You I have enclosed for you a Parent Interview.  Please take the time to fill it out and return it to school as soon as possible.  It will provide me with a great deal of insight into your child’s educational and emotional needs.  I have also included a Student Information Card. I realize it may seem redundant given that you have to fill out the school’s emergency and health cards, but I do like to have a card as well.

Jump Ropes, 4 Square Balls, Footballs, etc. Items to use at recess are more than welcome.  Please label any item your child brings in. Our recess will be on the field unless we have to stay in due to inclement weather or the field is too wet for play.  Make sure your child is ready to go out with appropriate clothing and accessories (hats, gloves, etc.).

Keep in Touch Communication is a key component in helping your child have the best school year ever.

Email - My school email address is: k.stotz@schoolsofwestfield.org

School Phone Number - The best time to reach me at school is from 8:30-9 a.m. or 3:30 - 4 p.m.  The phone number is 572-6520.

Press Releases are sent home daily.  Please review the information with your child and sign and return the next day.

Weekly Updates - Every Friday I will be sending home a weekly update regarding your child’s classroom behavior for the week.  This update will give us the opportunity to resolve any issues that might be occurring and/or give your child well deserved praise for appropriate student behavior.

Conferences - There are two scheduled conference days (see school calendar).  However, I am happy to meet with you at other times as needed. Please send in a note or email explaining why you’d like to meet and the most convenient times.

Lunch Please mark all lunches (bags or boxes) with your child’s name.  If your child is purchasing hot lunch or milk, please send the money in an envelope with his/her name and room number.  The cost for hot lunch is $2.50 and milk is $0.45. Our lunch time is 12:20 - 1:00. Please remind your child about proper hand washing or use of hand sanitizer before lunch and the importance of not sharing food due to allergies and other medical conditions.

Magazines Scholastic News and Science Spin These magazines are used in the classroom to teach students how to read informational text, current events, geography, history, science, etc.  The cost of the subscriptions is $10.00. Your assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

Need a Snack? Students are welcome to bring in a healthy snack and/or drink each day.  Water bottles are a wise choice as well. Snacks with peanuts or tree nuts are not allowed.  We do not have a set snack time.  Snacks may be consumed as we work through the morning and/or afternoon.  Please remind your student to wash or sanitize his/her hands prior to and after consuming his/her snack. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.  Students must clean up after him/herself in order to maintain the privilege of having a snack in the classroom.

Open House Munger Hill’s Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24th from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.  You and your child are invited to come and visit our classroom. Your child will be your tour guide for the event!

Parents’ Night I have set up a special night just for you!  On Tuesday, September 10th at 6:30 p.m. we will meet to discuss the information I have presented for you in this playbook and I will be able to answer your questions.  I will go over in greater detail the requirements of the curriculum, the Common Core Standards for Reading/Language Arts and Math, etc. Most importantly, this is the time for you to ask questions about the standards and the expectations of fourth grade.  I hope you will be able to join us. **Please note that this event is just for parents of students in Room 212.**

Questions Please contact me if you have any questions about your child’s progress or what may be occurring in the classroom.  You don’t have to wait until conference time on October 29th. I am more than happy to meet with you before or after school.  Please send in a note or an email with a good day and time and I will make the necessary arrangements.

Religious or Personal Beliefs Please let me know if there are any religious or personal beliefs that I need to be made aware of.  This information will be kept confidential. This information is very important as it will assist me in planning holiday events, crafts, read alouds, etc.
